Why do you need a Smudge Kit?

In today’s world we all need a little help to feel positive, centered and at peace. Whether you are someone who believes in spiritual cleansing, or not smudging is a key ingredient in providing a purified state of mind. Smudging is an essential ritual to purify all the negativity in your life. We have to pay attention to what our energy is telling us. We live in a detached state of mind with technology separating us from connecting to ourselves and others. Smudging can help us connect to a healthier and happier state of living.

Did you have a meeting that left you depleted of energy? Were you in traffic and you need to cleanse yourself of some negativity? Have you moved into a new home and you need to rid your space of restless spirits? Did you just buy something and that object is filled with Juju? Smudging is a very easy way to take care of all of these problems.

Where does Smudging come from?

Smudging is an ancient ceremony that originates from the Native America culture. The act of Smudging—or burning particular herbs for the medicinal and therapeutic properties of their smoke, is an ancient method that clears a specific space of negativity and allows it to manifests as positive energy. Even if you don’t believe that the smoke and ritual rid you of negative energy there is no denying a better state of mind through the practice. The aromatherapy and ritualistic steps of smudging promote a more mindful, purified and centered state of being.

When to Smudge?
Even the happiest of people accumulate negative vibrations over time so some find it helpful to smudge themselves, other people, their homes or objects several times a year. Smudging is part of a sacred ceremony so the best way to perform it is in a mindful and slow manner. Here are some examples of when smudging is helpful.

  • When moving into a new home, flat or room.
  • When you want to cleanse the energy from a particular place or object.
  • When feeling depressed, anxious, or otherwise unusual.
  • When needing to focus energy or thoughts.
  • Before sleep to prevent nightmares and sleep better.
  • When needing to relax.
What do you need for Smudging?
Smudge sticks are the easiest way to smudge. A smudge stick is a bundled bunch of herbs. It is most often in the form of Sage, Cedar, or Yerba Santa that you hold in your hand. Sometimes an Abalone shell can help catch the ash from the burning ingredients and a feather can help spread the smoke around the area you are smudging. You will also need a lighter to burn the smudge stick and create smoke.

Steps to Smudging a Home
  1. Start by offering your prayers and blessing to a higher being. Ask for a blessing as you undertake this task, and request the spirit guides to help you.

“Cleanse this space, remove the past. Fill this place with joy and love.”

  1. Light the smudge stick using a lighter. After the smudge stick catches fire, and starts to smoke, blow it out. If it does not catch fire, and burns out, it needs to be re-lit. An Abalone shell can be used to catch any ash that might fall from your smudge stick.

  1. Pray that the smudge stick be blessed and visualize a color or thought that promotes positivity and manifests good vibrations.

  1. Choose what you want to purify. People often purify or cleanse themselves, another person, an object or room. To manifest the best cleansing always cleanse yourself first. Take the Smudge stick in the dominate hand (the hand you write with) and draw the stick over yourself so the smoke purifies you.

  1. When purifying a home begin by taking the Smudge stick to the air and allow the smoke to rise and then form circular motions with the stick. (A turkey feather can be used to move around the smoke)

  1. Perform the ritual one room at a time by starting at the doorway of the room then smudge the smoke all over the frame, then over the walls and corners of the room. It is recommended when doing a whole house to start in the kitchen. Repeat this procedure for every room in the house. Once the entire house has been smudged with smoke, end the ceremony by thanking a higher being and any spirit guides. Request that the smoke be granted the ability to take away all the negative energy in the house and then throw open all the doors and windows to allow the smoke and negative energy to be carried away by the wind.
